After Wimbledon 2022, Nick Kyrgios, Tatjana Maria, and Heather Watson are three of

the players who will miss out on a rankings boost. This is due to the unintended result of the

men’s ATP Tour and women’s WTA Tour getting rid of ranking points at Wimbledon. They got

rid of ranking points at Wimbledon because the All England Club banned Belarusian and

Russian players from Wimbledon.

Novak Djokovic will lose the 2,000 points he got from winning it last year and be

overtaken by multiple people. British men’s number five Liam Broady responded in a tweet

about Djokovic’s imminent drop and wrote: “I am failing to see how this is punishing

Wimbledon?” It’s more like punishing the players instead.

Many players to did very well at Wimbledon, but Wimbledon but will be hurt by the

absence of ranking points. “The more you do good, the more you regret that there are not any

points,” women’s singles finalist and world number two Ons Jabeur said earlier this week.

“Honestly I don’t just look at myself. But I look at also Tatjana [Maria], because she struggled

with her ranking to come back. Now she makes a good run and she doesn’t have points.”

Nick Kyrgios faces the chance of being neglected for the US Open. A world number 40

would usually be guaranteed 1,200 points or more for reaching a Grand Slam final. Even if that

someone lost the final, that would take their ranking up to about 15th. This would be enough to be in the top 32 seeds in New York. Instead, Kyrgios will need to have a reasonable North

American hard-court swing before it to improve his ranking and getting into the top 32 for the US Open.

BBC commentator at Wimbledon, Australian, Todd Woodbridge, who won 16 Grand

Slam men’s doubles titles, believes stripping the tournament of ranking points has “hurt both

tours”. “This tournament is what people, we tennis players, play for,” he told BBC Sport.
