During the 3 months of Chelsey Lucas’s hire at Grambling State, she started to make headlines. Chelsey Lucas was a 2007 Grambling graduate who was an amazing player on the court for the Tigers. However, she made athletes, parents, and alumni mad after dropping all 19 players from the roster. After a few days, she was fired, and they were going to do an investigation into her decision.

During the school year, the volleyball team was trained by former coach, Demetria Keys-Johnson, who helped them get an 11-17 on their last season. Chelsey was hired soon after Demetria had taken another position. The team’s relationship with Chelsey seemed to be intense and rocky, many reports said it was because of an incident that occurred last season. Arkansas Pine Bluff played against Grambling State, and they lost. The coach of Arkansas Pine Bluff was Chelsey and Grambling State had a chant with the B-word in it making Chelsey think that they were talking to her. Due to this incident, Chelsey said this at their first meeting, “I bet you didn’t expect to see me again. I bet y’all will think twice about who y’all call a b—-.”

Even though their relationship didn’t start off the best, some of the players tried to develop a relationship with Chesley. In the following weeks of meetings, most of them were not volleyball related and more punishment related. In April, she called them individually and informed the 12 scholarship players that their scholarships were not going to be renewed for the upcoming season. The other 7 were told that their spots wouldn’t be renewed either.

Now, Chelsey is under investigation, while the school is searching for a new coach, and everyone gets to keep their spots.
