Twin Venezuelan Earthquake Leaves Huge Impact

On June 24, 2026, two earthquakes struck Venezuela just a few seconds apart. The first had a magnitude of 7.2 and the second had a magnitude of 7.5 (News For Kids). The damage was severe. Thousands of people have died and many homes have collapsed, burying bodies under the rubble.

The earthquakes struck a very vulnerable part of Venezuela, Caracas, where the older buildings were easier to be knocked down and crumble (NPR). The unique thing about these two earthquakes was that they were less than a minute apart and they struck the same place. “That made it uniquely catastrophic”, said William Barnhart, a geophysicist (NPR). With many people living in Caracas, the earthquake caused a devastating number of people to go missing or declared dead.

Rescue workers from 24 nations came in to help find survivors. Nearly 275 people have been rescued, but the death toll is far larger at 1,450 people with 774 buildings damaged (News For Kids). The shaking was felt from more than 100 miles away. Even though people have been found, the search is getting more and more difficult as the first 72 hours of finding survivors has already passed (NPR). Even with workers from different nations helping, Venezuela is still too poor to maintain their public services. The earthquake also damaged many hospitals, which leaves the medical system broken and under resourced.

Although the earthquakes were devastating and not all the bodies have been found, rescue workers are continuing to work tirelessly to help devastated families.
