In early June 2022, members of the US House of Representatives held a hearing delving into the January 6th, 2021 attacks on the US Capitol. The hearing concluded a year-long investigation of the horrific events and was broadcasted live on television.

On January 6th, 2021, congress was gathered to count the presidential election results of the electoral college. In denial of his loss, Mr. Trump insisted that Republican lawmakers protest the outcome. He also put pressure on Vice President Mike Pence to tamper with the votes by throwing them out (Pence refused).

Mr. Trump began speaking to a crowd of his supporters outside of the White House. He made bold accusations that the election was “stolen” and encouraged his supporters to progress into the Capitol to fight for their country. One of Trump’s concluding statements was, “[w]e’re going to try and give them [Republicans] the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country.”

That afternoon, a crowd of Trump supporters, many carrying weapons, forced their way into the Capitol building by way of smashing windows and breaking down doors. Of those who made it inside, many began foraging through lawmakers’ workspaces, while others helped more rioters climb into the building. As a result of the insurrection, seven people died and many more were injured.

The representative committee from the hearing this month included seven Democrats and two Republicans and was led by Democrat Bennie Thompson. The most prominent Republican position went to Liz Cheney. Most Republicans from the Congress did not support the investigation.

Republicans have shamed Ms. Cheney for her involvement in the investigation. She has responded with a warning, saying,” [t]here will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.”

The committee has spent this past year reviewing thousands of hours of videos, 100,000 documents, and interviewing over 1,000 witnesses. All of this was done to find the truth about events prior to the attacks. The hearing was intended for sharing information the committee had collected, but also to bring awareness to their findings as they were concerned a similar event would happen again if Americans did not learn.

As quotes, reports, and videos were thrown around at the hearing to show exactly what happened that day, many points were made regarding the organization of the protest. One significant point was that the violence did not form on just that day. Instead, there were two groups helping Mr. Trump plan the attack in advance.

Ms. Cheney also announced what the hearings going forward would look like, likely including Mr. Trump’s attempts to change the election results and efforts to make Mr. Pence revoke the results. The second hearing was held earlier this week, also attracting millions of live viewers.
