K. L. Walther’s While We’re Young Pulls on Your Heartstrings
While We’re Young is a book that reminds us of our best relationships with friends, family, and the community around us. The book by K. L. Walther was published in 2025, and it is a Young Adult contemporary romance set in modern-day Philadelphia, popular among many teens. It is about four teenagers, whose hearts and friendships are broken then mended on stupendous senior skip day.
The book was based off the 1986 teen comedy film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, where high school slacker Ferris fakes an illness to skip school with his best friend and girlfriend. While We’re Young is told from the alternating perspectives of Grace, Isabel, Everett, and James.
Grace, Isa, and Everett used to be the most devoted trio until their lives and truths got all messed up. First of all, Everett and Isa used to date, until their infamous Freshman Year Fracture. Now, not only is Grace secretly in love with Everett, but Isa has been hanging out with James, Grace’s brother, without Grace knowing.
All Grace must do to get her friends out of school is to execute her well planned out scheme. She needs to convince Isa to help her kidnap Everett while keeping James out of the equation. The three of them spend an epic day exploring Philly’s iconic sites, taste-testing the area’s ‘finest’ foods, and even manage to crash a wedding, all while trying to heal the gap that had formed between the friends.
K. L. Walther’s book has many strengths along with a few weaknesses. One thing the author does well is undoubtedly show every emotion the characters are feeling through dialogue, description, and their inner thoughts. In my opinion, the different perspectives of each chapter give the reader a great insight of every character’s personality and thoughts. This type of writing also keeps the reader’s attention because if they want to know what happens next from a specific point of view, they have to keep reading.
On the other hand, some readers might dislike the way the chapters switch in perspectives and find it confusing. The plot also moves at a fast pace as the whole book takes place in one day. Some readers may enjoy this type of writing, while others not so much.
Overall, While We’re Young is a book that teaches the reader that friendships are the strongest relationships of all. The author takes you on a remarkable journey with the characters as they figure out their feelings. Reading K. L. Walther’s While We’re Young makes you feel like you are on an emotional roller coaster with your favorite people by your side.
