On July 23, a group of ocean explorers were exploring the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and noticed something strange. There was a mysterious straight line of holes in the bottom of the ocean that they couldn’t seem to find an explanation for. Currently, scientists are investigating this mystery.

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a vast mountain range in the depths of the ocean. This immense ridge goes on for about 10,000 miles, making it the world’s longest mountain chain.

These holes that were found in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge looked like a track. They were spotted at 1.6 miles below sea level and are about a mile deep. They are spaced about 4 inches apart.

Scientists are left baffled, unable to explain why the holes are there. What could possibly have made these odd holes on the ocean floor? A post on Twitter from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Ocean Exploration project, also known as NOAA, said, “the origin of the holes has scientists stumped. The holes look human made, but the little piles of sediment around them suggest they were excavated by … something.”

But this isn’t the first-time scientists saw these strange holes. In 2004, scientists have also seen these patterns.

Are these holes made by extraterrestrials? Are they made by ocean creatures? Are they marks left by submarines long ago? Or are they simply made by humans?

Scientists will continue to do more ocean exploration near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to find an explanation for this ongoing mystery. According to The New York Times, Michael Vecchione, a NOAA deep-sea biologist who was part of the most recent expedition that found the holes at the bottom of the ocean, said, “there is something important going on there and we don’t know what it is. This highlights the fact that there are still mysteries out there.”
