Around two weeks ago, the San Francisco Giants baseball team held their annual Pride Night party in San Francisco, Oracle Park. This was to celebrate and honor the LGBTQ+ community. At this Pride Night, players were expected to wear a cap with a rainbow flag SF logo on it. Not all of the players wore what was said though.

Three pitchers wore the cap, but they also added a Bible verse from Genesis 9:12-16. They did this because they wanted to show the meaning of the rainbow which was a promise by God. In the Bible, from the story of Noah’s Ark, God uses the rainbow as a promise to never flood the Earth again. Although a fourth pitcher chose to wear the cap, the scene of the other three pitchers violating the rules upset many LGBTQ+ fans.

The team issued an apology to fans who felt disrespected. They said that the pitchers who wrote the Bible verses on their caps were violating the team’s uniform policy. The players were quickly warned not because of what was written on their caps, but because they weren’t following the rules.

The San Francisco Giants were known for promoting the LGBTQ+ community with the first day of showing respect toward the LGBTQ+ community being in 1994 and continuing until now. The rainbow has two meanings: for Christians, it’s their promise from God, and for the LGBTQ+ people, it’s their flag to represent their community.
