For years, his life had no purpose, or at least that was what he told himself every day. Each day, he would go to work, in a coma-like state. After working for almost six hours, he traveled back home. He did this every day except for Sunday; Sunday was special because he got to take a break from his work and went to church. It was always the same boring schedule for the first 20 years after college graduation, and many times during work, he asked himself, “how have I gotten myself into this situation?” Every single time, he had no answer. So on he went, working, and going to church until one fateful day.
The day started out like every other: eating breakfast, driving to work, and working for six hours. The day changed right as he got out of work. While driving home, he noticed a peculiar tree that wasn’t there before. The weird thing about this tree was that when he first looked at it, he saw that the tree was leafless and barren. But the more he looked at it and studied it, the more details could see. This tree had a strong trunk. It had hollows in which little flying creatures dwelled. At first, he thought that he was hallucinating and decided to go home to rest. The next day, the tree was still there with the same mysterious property. Finally, a week after the tree appeared, he accepted that it was a weird tree.
He started to think about the tree more and more until he realized that he could be just like the tree, noticeable, different, and kind of weird. The more he thought about it, the more he liked his idea. He could solve his problem about not liking his job and not being bored every single day. Just like that, his view on life changed drastically. After he stood out more, he got a pay raise and got more friends. He discovered that he had a photographic memory. He was able to describe something he has seen thoroughly; Being different allowed him to help him succeed in his job, and get his dream life of living joyously every day, even though he wasn’t super rich.
30 years after seeing that tree, he was a successful businessman who was half in the upper class, and half in the middle class. He got married and had children of his own. Now that he had time to spare, he would always somehow end up thinking about that tree and how it changed his life so much.
