Otherwise known as one of the most catastrophic earthquakes Venezuela has seen, the Venezuelan Earthquakes were a rare doublet (one shortly after the other). The occurrence of the deadly earthquake pair was not just a coincidence, but seemingly a sequence of events.

On June 24th, 2026 at around 6:00 pm VET (Venezuela standard time), the first of the two major earthquakes hit with a magnitude of 7.2. A force with a power level capable of cracking highways and knocking people off their feet. Less than 40 seconds later, the second one hit with a magnitude of 7.5. The result? Around 4,400 dead, 16,000 injured, along with 40,000 missing. Do not forget the piling amounts of broken homes, stores, and hospitals scattered on the floor throughout the country. The earthquakes have put launched Venezuela into one of its darkest moments of the past century.

Now, scientists are wondering how this unfortunate phenomenon happened. Usually doublets occur within a couple hours, or even days of each other, but the Venezuelan Earthquakes took place less than a minute from one another. The most agreed upon theory states that the first earthquake caused the other and the Venezuelan Earthquakes were not a doublet, but instead one single 50 second earthquake.

The Venezuelan Earthquakes, whether they were a doublet or a single rupture, caused many smaller earthquakes. and The damage was also widespread damage throughout Venezuela with the two most impacted cities being Caracas and La Guaria. Thousands of families have been suffering and hoping for a better future.
