Nahel M., the teenager who died at the hands of a police officer, was 17 years old at the time. Nahel was pulled over because he violated a traffic law and then was shot by a police officer. This incident of lethal police violence started protests in many cities, as people call for justice. There was violence, buildings set on fire, and hundreds of people were arrested when a riot broke out causing chaos after this incident happened.

Heavily armed police officers were running around chasing large groups because of the violence. “No justice, no peace,” one man screamed into an NPR reporter’s microphone, then ran away from armed police. There were about 45,000 officers on the scene, who made an unsuccessful attempt to stop the violence.

Nahel was driving a yellow Mercedes when he was shot at close range at a police stop near the Nelson Mandela Square in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, France around 8 a.m. on Tuesday according to Nanterre Mayor Patrick Jarry. “You are going to get a bullet in the head,” a voice is heard saying in a video recording, according to the France24 news outlet. As the Mercedes moved forward, a bullet shot was heard and Nahel died at that moment. His car rolled forward and crashed into an utility pole. Two other people were in the car with Nahel. One of them has spoken to police, but the other fled the scene and is being looked for by law enforcement, Jarry said.

The police officer who shot Nahel was taken into custody after the shooting. The officer who fired his gun said he did so for a number of reasons. One, from the desire to stop the vehicle to fears that the car might hit him or someone else, the newspaper La Montagne reported.

Even president Emmanuel Macron think this crime is inexcusable. “A teenager was killed. That is inexplicable and unforgivable,” he said.

The violence in cities is dissipating and isn’t as bad as the first few days, though the damage has been done.
