Two major decisions issued on Thursday, June 25th, 2026, by the Supreme Court judges gives current U.S. President Donald Trump more power over immigrants than ever before. The Supreme Court judges voted 6-3 on two different issues in favor of President Trump’s rulings and his ideology. These two new policies will affect both people who are given a Temporary Protection Status (TPS) from certain countries and people seeking asylum coming from the southern border of Mexico.
The first policy ends is ending TPS, a humanitarian program created in 1990 for certain countries, like Haiti and Syria. TPS stands for temporary protected status. TPS is for people who come from countries that are going through many temporary and extraordinary conditions, such as war. President Trump’s new policy will likely cause these people to go back to their home country. making it dangerous for them. This would be dangerous endagers them due to the number of disasters that are happening in their home country. This caused Ahilan Arulanantham, a lawyer representing Syrian migrants, to say that millions of people, “are at risk of being sent back to countries in crisis.”
The second law allowed the administration to revive the turn‑back policy. This policy limits asylum seekers from crossing the US southern border stepping onto U.S. soil from the southern border of Mexico to seek asylum and receive protections. The administration had asked the Supreme Court to permit the government to revive the policy. It was first used in 2016 under former President Barack Obama and now expanded under President Trump. The so-called turn-back policy stopped asylum seekers from setting foot on U.S. soil.
