Strangers… Again?
Abby A.

Today, you were walking by the subway. You saw someone, vaguely familiar, but you were not sure who they were. They looked sad, drained. Their eyes were red and puffy like they were crying the night before. Did they go through a breakup maybe? You hesitated to say hi, but, by the time you decided to say hi, they had already left. You hoped that, whatever happened to them, that they are doing okay.

It had already been two days. You kept thinking about that one person. You were not sure why, or who they are still. But you hoped to see them again. You realized that you had to get more milk during breakfast. You sadly ate your cheerios without milk and headed to Foodmax. While you were in the dairy section, you saw the person. The same person as two days ago, looking happier. You realized how nice their outfit was. You wanted to compliment them, but you chickened out. “It isn’t worth it,” you thought.

During checkout, they were behind you in line. You were so close, so close to greeting them. Right as they were about to speak to you, it was your turn to check out. Afraid, you hurriedly paid for the milk and speed-walked to your car. You exhaled. You hadn’t even realized you were holding your breath. Your heart was pounding. You were still not sure why, but you know them. You’ve met them before… you’re just not sure where or when.

A week passed in a blur. You were still thinking about them when doing the dishes, when trying to sleep, even while eating. Why were they about to speak to you? What were they even going to say? Should you have listened to what they were going to say? You’re not sure. Your mind raced from place to place. You’re sure of it. You know them and they know you… right? Or are you crazy? You’re really not sure and you’re going crazy. For some reason though, you felt like you knew everything about them.

Suddenly, you decided to assume that they had emotionally abusive parents, crazy friends, and an android phone? How would you even know such specific facts? How would you even know what phone they had? You had never even seen it out… You briefly remember one memory, of him and some female figure. You were not sure who she was, but they both seemed vaguely familiar. Still you decided that you guys should stay strangers, whether what you assumed about them was true or not, you forgot for a reason. Right?
