Scientists Create Artificial Cell That Mimics Life, Prompting Ethical Debate

On July 1st, a team of researchers from the University of Minnesota has created SpudCell, a man-made cellular system that called SpudCell which is able to eat, grow, split into two, and create new generations of itself, a great achievement in the field of synthetic biology. This discovery has become the subject of discussion about the future of biotechnology and the very essence of life.

What differs SpudCell from other man-made cells is the fact that while the latter were created through the reduction of already existing cells, SpudCell consists of entirely non-living components. According to synthetic biologists Kate Adamala and biochemist Aaron Engelhart, SpudCell is the first man-made cell created bottom-up which is able to pass through the whole cycle of life and produce offspring.
Even though it shows life-like behavior, scientists noted that the cell is not alive and cannot exist independently from a host cell since it does not have ribosomes that create proteins. SpudCell needs a constant supply of enzymes and nutrition from the scientists.
Scientists claim that the findings may help scientists better comprehend the origin of life and provide new methods for engineering cells that can have some useful abilities. The potential applications may include drug delivery systems, regenerative medicine, sustainable products, and even innovations within food technology. Nevertheless, scientists point out that SpudCell is only a demonstration project, not a ready-to-use technology yet.
The development has also sparked a discussion on biosecurity issues. Scientists agree that SpudCell does not pose any danger at this moment since it can exist only under laboratory conditions, but still they stress the need to discuss the responsible usage of innovations in synthetic biology. In particular, some scientists pointed out that future artificial cell technologies, if misused, might be used for harmful purposes like environmental imbalance, pathogen creating, and unintended mutations.
According to researchers, the significance of SpudCell lies not in its present form but in what it may open up in the future. As the field of synthetic biology evolves, scientists expect new innovations like SpudCell to shake up current views on life as well as offer new perspectives for medical and biological sciences.
