Scientists create a new type of lab-made, life-like cell

In 2026, scientists at the University of Minnesota have created a new type of cell. This cell is called a SpudCell. This is one of the most advanced cells ever created, as it can complete a full life cycle. The purpose of creating this cell is to be able to heal damage in the human body more efficiently.

The special quality of this cell is that it can reproduce by completing a full life cycle, spawning its next generation. Previous attempts could not create this advanced kind of a cell.

This cell can also reproduce by dividing into two and can feed itself and grow.

While the SpudCell may be advanced, it is very dependent. Even though it can build many parts of a cell system, it cannot build its own ribosomes, which means it cannot make its own food. This means it cannot live outside of a lab. The scientists must give the cells their nutrients.

The scientists who created this cell used decades of synthetic biology as a foundation.

According to biosecurity experts, the SpudCell currently poses no risk since it lives in the lab. This cell, however, can be beneficial and harmful. This was true according to the Becky Mackelprang.

Her goal is to make sure biotechnologies are developed safely. She said, “The tools themselves are not inherently ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ Rather, they can be used to build beneficial or harmful biological systems, just as a hammer can be used to build a home or to break a window,” when speaking with the New York Times.
The SpudCell is one of the most advanced cells ever created by scientists. It is the start of what is likely to be the spread of man-made cells. These cells could be used in the future to make medicine and heal sicknesses that cannot be healed today.
