After weeks of fighting, Ukraine was forced to withdraw from the eastern city of Lysychansk. Ukraine’s general staff said, “In order to preserve Ukrainian defenders, a decision was made to withdraw.” At this point, Russia has occupied 20 percent of Ukraine. After Russia took control of Lysychansk, Slovyansk — one of the biggest cities in the Donetsk region — is now exposed to Russia’s forces.

Russia had many advantages like manpower, artillery, aircraft and more. Further west of Lysychansk, the city of Slovyansk saw heavy shelling. At least six people were killed, and 15 fires were seen. Just over a week ago, Russia captured Severodoetsk, a ruined city due to Russia’s bombardment. Just before he declared war, President Vladimir Putin recognized all of Luhansk and Donetsk as independent from Ukraine.
