Diamonds are rare rocks that are formed of carbon from deep in the earth, around 100 miles into the ground. They are made from ancient volcanic eruptions. A really long time ago, it forced the diamonds up quickly to the Earth’s surface, where they stayed. Diamonds are the strongest materials on earth! Getting a diamond can take days, weeks, months, years, and even millions of years. There are many more types of diamonds. A diamond called the Lulo Rose was discovered in the African country of Angola.

The 170-carat diamond is the biggest discovered in the last 300 years. Lulo Rose, the diamond, is named after the mine that it was found in. Some similar diamonds have also been sold for a big price, a few million dollars.

One similar diamond named Pink Star was sold for 71.2 million dollars. The chief of Lucapa, Stephan Wetherall, told the Associated Press, “only one in 10,000 diamonds is colored pink. So, you’re certainly looking at a very rare article when you find a very large pink diamond.”

“This record and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Lulo continues to showcase Angola as an important player on the world stage,” said Diamantino Azevedo, Angola’s minister of mineral resources. The diamond was found at the Lulo alluvial diamond mine, the mine’s owner the Lucapa Diamond Company, announced Wednesday on its website. The diamond weighed 200 milligrams. Diamonds are the strongest materials on earth.

Now, scientists can make the diamonds inside laboratories! Some people say that this is a better way environmentally, to create diamonds. One scientist was able to make a diamond out of carbon in our air, and it was named Sky Diamond.
