On July 1, Guatemala’s government announced efforts to establish eight marine protected areas in the country to help protect marine animals at the United Nation’s Ocean Conference in Lisbon, Portugal.
Guatemala is home to many different types of sea life, but most are not protected. This is a global problem; The ocean is 70% of the earth and yet only 7% of it is protected. Therefore, Guatemala’s government is trying to create more marine areas.
A pledge was agreed to protect at least 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030 at the UN biodiversity summit in 2021.
Other countries have also taken the initiative. Last year, the British government announced that any activity that can harm nature would be banned. It is hoped that fishing and dredging will be banned to help the animals and plants live a safer and better life.
The director of Marine Conservation Simon Cripps said, “We congratulate Guatemala for their global leadership. They understand the value of natural resources is driving a blue economy and making sure that people benefit from this.”
