On Friday, a young prince and future monarch becomes nine. On a UK beach, Prince George grinned for the camera in a snapshot taken to celebrate his ninth birthday.

His mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, who is renowned for documenting her children at important times, was behind the camera. With a sandy beach and the waves in the background, her son is pictured wearing a polo-style top.

The duchess is an enthusiastic amateur photographer who accepted a lifetime honorary membership of the Royal Photographic Society in 2017 as a token of their appreciation for her “skill and enthusiasm.” Rumor has it that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are considering relocating to Berkshire to be closer to the Queen and their son’s new school.

George has experienced some exciting recent months. During the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee prolonged weekend in June, he made an appearance alongside his siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. The young royals viewed the aircraft fly-by on the balcony of Buckingham Palace during the event. Later, during the Platinum Jubilee, they sat inside the royal box alongside their parents.

Aside from their yearly birthday pictures, George and his siblings’ younger years were marked by very few glimpses of the royal children. However, the times have changed, and we’ve seen all of the Cambridge children quite a bit this summer. William and Kate brought Prince George to the Wimbledon men’s tennis championship. George also held the trophy won by tennis player Novak Djokovic.
