Imagine being a president. Having a great honor to serve the country! But then, imagine all that being lost. Losing your popularity and becoming a criminal. That’s what happened to Donald Trump.
Mr. Trump has been accused of attempting to overturn his election defeat in 2021. After investigating all the claims that had been made against him, the federal grand jury indicted him.
This means Trump has to go into court to determine whether he is innocent or guilty, which makes him the first president so far in American history to be hit with criminal charges!
But what exactly is he charged with? Trump is now facing four serious charges, which are conspiracy, or knowingly breaking the law, in order to defraud, or trick, the US, and get in the way of official decisions. It happened after Donald Trump lost to Joe Biden.
Trump was claiming that the officials messed up the votes and that he was the rightful winner of the election.
In his indictment, Trump was accused of forcing Mike Pence, the vice president at the time to use his role to change the election results. He was also accused of lying that the election was rigged and even trying to defraud the votes and make it seem like he won!
But that wasn’t all. Two months later, a mob of angry Americans stormed to the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. where the US congress was in the process of making Joe Biden the new US president. They disagreed with him being the president and supported Trump.
These rioters broke in and tried to stop it from happening.
Trump ended up in trial again. But Mr. Smith said he wanted to charge Trump with a quick trial. He was innocent until he was proven guilty.
