Portugal beats Spain at the Nations League
On June 8th, 2025, Portugal beat Spain at the Nations League during the penalty shootout which ended 5-3, in favor of Portugal, after the game came to a tie. Portugal earned themselves the title of being the first country to win the Nations League trophy twice.
Many were excited for this matchup- 2 huge names in the history of football competing for the first time. This game included the well known captain of Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Spain’s teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal. Spain took the lead 21 minutes in with a goal from Martin Zubimendi. Soon enough, Portugal’s Nuno Mendes scored which turned the game into a tie, 1-1. Spain then took the lead again, as Mikel Oyarzabal scored a goal, leaving the score at 2-1 as they made their way into half-time.
During the 2nd half, Ronaldo came in and scored a goal, tying the game once more. No side scored for the rest of the game, taking the game to extra time, where the first team to score wins. Still, no goals were scored during extra time, which brought the two teams to the penalty shootouts.
Portugal won the coin flip and started with Goncalo Ramos. Ramos scored, bringing Portugal to the lead against Spain. Mikel Merino from Spain scored after, as did Vitinha from Portugal, Alex Baiano from Spain, Bruno Fernandes from Portugal, Roman Alarcon Suarez from Spain, and Laman Yamel from Portugal. After that, Alvaro Morata from Spain missed, keeping the scores at 4-3. Ruben Neves from Portugal scored the winning shot, and the penalties ended 5-3 in favor of Portugal. This means it was Ronaldo’s side that held the trophy.
After the match, 40-year-old legend, Ronaldo, was in tears as he said that “winning for Portugal is always special. I have many titles with clubs, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal.” This trophy is his 3rd win with Portugal, following their 2016 European Championship and 2019 Nations League wins.
