Conan Gray’s new Full-length album, Superache, Helped the popstar gain traction after working his way up from being a YouTube artist.

Gray started his YouTube channel at age 12, releasing his first song, “Those Days.” It was about his experience of living in a small Texas town, named Rockdale. He wrote the song after watching a video of Adele singing in her own bedroom, creating lyrics in his song. Some of the most resonant lyrics are, “Some things always stay the same” and “But I really hope you didn’t mind the way I was those days.” Some of his fans laughed at the fact he embraced a knowing perspective at 12.

However, now, at age 23, his music even deeper than before. In a recent performance, Gray attracted a large crowd of fans through a more well-known song of his, “Heather.” In this song, he sings about his jealousy of a woman who’s dating his crush. Gray the same method many other pop singers use to gain fame quickly: by evoking listeners’ emotions.

In a recent interview about why he decided to start YouTube, Gray stated: “I was just doing it because what else are you supposed to do when you live in a random town in the middle of Texas?” In his childhood, he often moved to and from his divorced parents’ homes, before settling in Georgetown, Texas, where he created videos for fun. Then, in 2017, Gray released a new song, “Idle town,” about how he came to cherish his small-town life. It quickly exploded online, and even led to him dropping out of his college at UCLA and signing a deal with musical group Republic Records.

Later, in March 2020 during the pandemic, Gray started writing his newest album, Superache, which was released last Friday. In the same interview, he stated that the album was from a collection of 250 songs, mashed together over an 18-month-period. Dan Nigro, the producer of the songs in Superache, said that “It took a while to figure out what we were making.” Then, in February of 2021, Conan released some new songs that Nigro said were more mature than any of his albums before, saying: “It gave us the confidence to be like, ‘OK, we have the beginnings of something really special.’”

Conan’s growing fame from the past few years also led to him performing at Coachella’s music festival and attending and performing at the Met Gala. After the pandemic, he stated: “In the past few years, I’ve really grown to see that I have to let myself make mistakes if I want to grow and not be this stunted human being.” He said that “It’s better to be sad than feel nothing at all.”
