In Sydney, Australia, a trial project has been adding fumes from decomposing wastewater into people’s gas supply. This technology has the potential to be used across Australia to save energy.

According to Kidsnews, the taps at the Malabar Biomethane Plant are about to be turned on in southeastern Sydney. The Malabar Biomethane Plant is a facility “which traps the biogas created as organic waste streams – including agricultural and industrial waste, as well as sewerage – break down.”

Jemena, a gas supplier, will take the biogas, and convert it into pipeline-quality biomethane, or gas that meets the standard required for it to be used in the pipeline.

“The gas [from wastewater] that was otherwise just being produced and going to the atmosphere without doing any useful work, is now doing useful work,” Jemena’s Managing Director Frank Tudor said.

The facility’s goal is to produce 95 terajoules of energy each year, equivalent to the amount of energy used by about 6300 Sydney houses.

These technologies have also been carried on to other countries, such as those in Europe, China, and America. The poo-powered facilities have shown gas networks can reduce their emissions greatly by blending in biomethane.

Mr. Tudor said, “One European study suggested the use of biogas rather than natural gas could cut emissions by 85 percent.”

“There’s a lot of work to be done by households if they choose to migrate from gas to electricity. If we can offer them a choice that (they) can retain gas and it is renewable gas, we believe that there’s a multitude of benefits that come from that,” he said.
