In March 2020, a day before police officers shot and killed 26-year-old Breonna Taylor in her apartment in Louisville, Kentucky, a detective tried to persuade a judge that an ex-boyfriend of Breonna’s could possibly be using her home to stash drugs and money.

Joshua Jaynes, the detective, said Taylor’s former boyfriend had been having packages sent to her apartment. Jaynes claimed to have talked to a postal inspector who had confirmed the shipments, which he outlined in a statement.

This week, federal prosecutors said Jaynes had lied – it was never clear whether the former boyfriend was receiving packages at Taylor’s home. And Jaynes, the prosecutors said, had never confirmed anything with any postal inspector. As chaos over Taylor’s death grew, prosecutors said in new criminal charges that Jaynes met with another detective and agreed on a story to tell the FBI as well as their own colleagues in an effort to cover up their misleading statements.

Jaynes pleaded not guilty to the federal charges on Thursday and has said that he was half-relying on information from a different officer when he prepared his statement.

He also revealed that he did not personally verify the package information with a postal inspector. He has said he was told by a sergeant about the packages and believed that was enough to back up his claims.

“I had no reason to lie in this case,” he told a police board that was considering his removal last year.

However, in the federal indictment against Mr. Jaynes, prosecutors charged that this claim was also false.

This is just one case where justice has not been served correctly for Black Americans, others include Amadou Diallo, Sean Bell, Rekia Boyd, Kimani Gray, and many more.
