North Korea has started taking in its first post-pandemic visitors from Russia and China. For other countries, taking in visitors after the pandemic would be normal. However, North Korea is a country that does not have a reputation for appreciating foreigners.

As a result, North Korea accepting foreigners is certainly odd. Are there any ulterior motives for North Korea to take foreigners? Did North Korea do it out of the kindness of its heart? Was it a political move? These are some of the many questions being fielded by one of the most totalitarian nations in the world.

North Korea is one of the most dangerous countries in the world, and its every action is always monitored by the U.S. and its allies. North Korea is backed up by China and Russia, and directly attacking North Korea would essentially lead to a war between all three nations with an incredible amount of manpower and resources. The reason why North Korea is backed up by China and Russia is not simply because North Korea is aligned with similar political ideologies. But because of how strategically important it is.

If the U.S. managed to control North Korea, it would mean that U.S. and allied weaponry could sit next to the border of Manchuria with no consequences. Such a fate would lead to China being extremely vulnerable.

According to National Interest, if China managed to control North Korea, it would essentially be a buffer zone between South Korea and China. This would allow no hostile countries to be next to its northern border and makes North Korea a valuable ally to China.

The strategic importance of North Korea means that China will do anything to protect North Korea from being invaded by the U.S. and its allies. North Korea needs China in order to sustain itself due to harsh sanctions from the U.S. and its allies. The relationship between China and North Korea is mutually beneficial, as China is North Korea’s number one trading partner, and North Korea serves as a buffer state between China and South Korea.

The relationship between the two countries means that both countries will support each other to prevent one another from collapsing. Jennifer Lind, a professor from Dartmouth University, states, “While the Chinese certainly would prefer that North Korea not have nuclear weapons, their greatest fear is regime collapse.” This means that China would support North Korea no matter what to ensure that the North Korean regime does not side with the U.S. and its allies.

North Korea accepting refugees post-pandemic from China and Russia shows the bond between the three nations and sends everyone a message that the three countries have each other’s backs.
