On April 29, 2026, a truck made history by completing a delivery without a driver! This is not the first time a truck without a driver was on the roads. However, all previous missions have been controlled by humans remote controlling the trucks, or on private roads. This was the first truck to have completely driven on its own with an AI system, but without any human help. This “mission” was also on a public highway. This truck is an invention of Bot Auto, a company that produces driverless 18-wheelers.
It all started at 1:16 A.M. in Houston. The strange time was to test how the truck would navigate through the dark. This AI-powered truck maneuvered through tricky situations, such as traffic and closed lanes. At one point, a speeding motorcycle cutting across the truck’s way. The truck avoided what could have been an unfortunate disaster if a human were driving. The truck simply changing its position in its lane.
The 18-wheeler has 8 sensors, 15 high-definition (HD) cameras for a 360-degree view. This way, the truck can tell more clearly what is in front of it. When in an unsafe situation, the truck will stop, giving cars or anything else more room to handle the situation safely. There are computers aboard the truck that can sense dangers up to 1640 feet.
This historical truck drive has started many debates. Many think that technology could threaten jobs for human truck drivers across the country. However, others argue that it is cheaper for the self driven truck. This truck has many benefits, such as being available literally 24/7. Since the truck brakes softly and maintains a fair speed, it usually uses less gas than human drivers. The operators also don’t have to pay the AI for driving the truck, too. The self-driven truck could change delivery economy forever.
