Scientists have only learned a little about it recently, and they are worried that it might be endangered. These monkeys live in the high trees of the Congo rainforest.
In 2008, a researcher had taken a blurry photo, which gave the first hint of the monkey. Junior Amboko is one of the researchers who recently helped identify the new species, and he is the leader of the team that found the monkey. “Since it wasn’t a clear picture,” he said, “No one paid attention.” Then, in 2018, another researcher took a clear photo, and scientists had seen that it had orange lips, shiny black fur and a long tail.
Researchers traveled to villages around the area, and only eight villages knew about the monkey. Some groups of people call it “Likweli.” Some called it “Branch Shaker.” Finding the monkeys was challenging. They needed to cover a huge area, and they needed to search in the high trees. They needed to find the correct location and look up. They also recorded the calls of the monkey by rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Scientists have only seen the monkey 114 times in four years. Mr. Amboko said that the monkeys are “kind of shy.” It’s another reason that people only know a little about them.
Three of the monkeys were killed by poachers in a park. The staff gave the bodies to the scientists so that they can study it closely.
