A museum in Rotterdam, Netherlands recently covered the museum’s floor with peanut butter. This unusual display honors a famous artist named Win T. Schippers. He passed away about a month ago at the age of 83, but his awkward and funny ideas continue to surprise people. The art work is called “Pindakaasvloer” or “Peanut Butter Floor.“
It was spreaded (spread is the correct past tense form of the verb) in a large hexagon. To make the art, museum workers followed strict rules left by Mr. Schippers. They were told to spread 34 pounds of peanut butter on each square meter. The artist wanted the peanut butter to be smooth in a boring way. He said that no one should stand on the peanut butter, or stand next to the peanut butter, lie down on the peanut butter, or try to learn anything about it.
Sanra Kisteras is the one in charge of the museum and said that Mr. Schippers’s work makes people ask, “Is this art?” or “Am I allowed to like this?” She believes this feeling of confusion is part of why this art work is special. Mr. Schippers believed that life can be serious and funny at the same time.
