MLB Trade Deadline is Soon. What Will the Yankees Say?
On July 31st, 2025, the Yankees will have to decide if they will trade their outfielder, Spencer George Jones, for a third baseman currently playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Eugenio Suárez. The Yankees have been in need of a third baseman, and Suárez might be the best player at the position, but he isn’t cheap, necessitating a trade of Jones, a player in Minor League Baseball (MLB).
Jones is a baseball player playing in the Minor League Baseball, currently playing for the New York Yankees. Though he is full of potential for playing as a center fielder in the future, the Yankees need a third baseman. For example, David Freese, third baseman playing for St. Louis Cardinals, saved its team and lead them to championship during Game 6 of the 2011 World Series. A third baseman is extremely important, as they are crucial for advancing players and making strategic decisions during plays. Currently, the Yankees’ third basemen have been batting under .150, completely below average, so Suárez would be extremely beneficial to the Yankees.
But why trade Jones for Suárez? Even though Jones has complete potential in becoming a center fielder and has huge successes, “he is whiffing on 37.6 percent of his swings in Triple A, and his 74.8 percent in-zone contact rate would rank second-to-last in MLB,” wrote the New York Times. And “those numbers would be expected to get worse when facing major-league pitching,” it continued. But even though his percentage on whiffing swings is high, his fly-ball swings have changed from 29.2% to 40.3% in less than a year. And his ground-ball swings have decreased from 42.3% to nearly half as much. He is improving drastically.
Jones has heard about the trade deadline. And what does he think of them? Many people would expect a frustrated reaction, but he acts quite casually about it. He was positively commenting on one of the latest posts. In an interview with The Athletic, he said, “There was a post of me hitting a home run, and one of the comments was, ‘Get ready to speak desert, buddy.’ That’s a good one. I saw that and was dying laughing.” Although Jones does not show much emotion about the trade, he says he still wants to be part of the Yankees. “I was just talking to my girlfriend about this, but at the end of the day, I want to play in New York and be a part of this organization and stay loyal to it,” he says.
Ultimately, what the Yankees might say remains unknown, but Jones’ loyalty is genuine. Will they trade Jones to get Suárez, or will they stay loyal to their player?
