All About the 2025 MLB All-Star Games
Even though the All-Star Game is not a federal holiday, some treat it like one. The All-Star Game brings people together. It’s a celebration. And there is a lot of hearty, good food. Similar to what a holiday has to offer.
For those who may not know about the MLB All-Star Game, it is when the best players in the league compete against each other in a game between the National League and the American League. Both are leagues within the MLB, and they were separate until they merged in the 2000s. Fans, players, coaches, and the commissioner’s office all vote on the players for the teams. The positions, including designated hitter, are decided by fan vote. The game was held on July 15, 2025, at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia.
This year, the National starting lineup included Shohei Ohtani from the Dodgers, Ronald Acuña Jr. from the Braves, Ketel Marte from the Diamondbacks, Freddie Freeman from the Dodgers, Manny Machado from the Padres, Will Smith from the Dodgers, Kyle Tucker from the Cubs, Francisco Lindor from the Mets, and Pete Crow-Armstrong from the Cubs. They went against the American League, whose starting lineup featured Gleyber Torres from the Tigers, Riley Greene also from the Tigers, Aaron Judge from the Yankees, Cal Raleigh from the Mariners, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. from the Blue Jays, Ryan O’Hearn from the Orioles, Junior Caminero from the Rays, Javier Báez from the Tigers, and Jacob Wilson from the Athletics.
After both leagues tied 6-6 through nine innings, the National League beat the American League in a home run swing 4-3. This followed a 2022 rule change where an All-Star tie is broken by a swing-off. In this, each team sends three hitters to the plate with three swings each, and the total home runs determines the winner.
While some may complain that ending a game with a home run swing may be bad, Logan Webb, who plays for the Giants and is part of the National League, thinks differently. According to the New York Times, he even got approval from other baseball players in a group text. “We had a little group text, and everyone’s like, we should never do extra innings ever again. It should be just a straight home run derby,” he said.
Next year, the All-Star Game will be held at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, home of the Phillies. This year’s All-Star Game MVP, Kyle Schwarber, coincidentally plays for the Phillies. Will he make it to another All-Star Game and win back-to-back MVP titles?
