Miss Meurtre

Part 4

Sadie snorted. “No duh, the body’s gone. The question is: where did it go?”
Elliot ignored her, beginning to look around the room. There wasn’t blood splattered on the floor, but since only Lizzie’s neck was wounded and bleeding, it would have been easy to hide the wound and prevent it from bleeding everywhere.
“Hello? Are you just gonna ignore me?” Sadie sighed again when Elliot proceeded to stay silent. Theodore looked between them.
“Maybe you two should leave.”

Elliot glanced over at him, preparing to open her mouth, but Sadie was already clutching her arm and dragging her out of the room. “Great idea, Mr. Theodore, guess we’re going to leave.”

“Sadie,” Elliot hissed. “What are you doing? I’m no—”
“Great idea,” Sadie insisted, her iron-clad grip forcing Elliot to move with her.
Sadie dragged her out into the hall where Elliot was promptly released.
Sadie put her hands on her hips and glared at her. “You can’t keep doing this, Elliot!”
Elliot blinked. “What did I do?”
Sadie groaned, gesturing in the general direction of Lizzie’s room. “This investigation! Come on, Elliot, you know I love you, but this is getting to be too much. Lizzie got killed, we got shot at—”
Elliot raised her hands. “Sadie, I know this can be scary, but—”
“We almost died!” Sadie snapped, loudly enough that both of them froze. Sadie took a breath. “Listen, I know this is important to you, but you need to know when to stop.”

Elliot felt a burst of confusion. Her aunt was dead. Her body was gone. Stop? Stop? Elliot couldn’t stop. She wanted justice for her aunt, no matter how eccentric she was. “I can’t stop,” Elliot said. “I can’t stop,” she repeated. “I can’t stop this investigation because if I don’t do it, who will? Not the adults, certainly. And you seem to be as bad as them.”

Sadie’s eyes widened. “That’s not what I mean—”
“No, I think I know exactly what you mean.” Elliot shoved past her and marched down the hallway and up to the attic. She felt Sadie’s eyes on the back of her neck, but Sadie didn’t come after her.
If Sadie didn’t want to help her, then fine. Elliot would figure this out on her own.
