Kami Rita Sherpa breaks the world record most Mount Everest summits

In early May of 2026, Kami Rita Sherpa broke the world record for most times a human has climbed Mount Everest. As a Sherpa, or mountain guide, he is frequently helping others on their journeys up the mountain and also helping to bring materials to the base camps.

Kami Rita Sherpa climbed the tallest mountain peak in the world 32 times, breaking his own world record. The day he reached his 32nd climb, he was leading people up the mountain. He is known as the ‘Everest Man’ and he is 56.

He was born in a family of climbers in Solukhumbu region of Nepal. Kami Rita Sherpa first reached the peak of the mountain in 1994. Almost every year from 1994 to now, he has climbed to the top and sometimes twice in a year.

On the same day Kami Rita Sherpa broke his record, Lhakpa Sherpa, known as the ‘Mountain Queen’, broke her own record of the most times a female has reached the top of Mount Everest. It was her 11th ascent. The tourism department of Nepal has recognized the achievements of both climbers.
