He pitched an idea that would bring 20 billion dollars to his association, but instead of praise, people are now asking him to resign.

This plan changes the sport by putting part of the World Cups commercial ownership into private hands, decision-making power that has been run by FIFA, a nonprofit in Zurich, for about 96 years. Many football associations, such as UEFA and their 55 member associations voiced their opinions about the matter by announcing that they would boycott further FIFA competitions until the matter is resolved.

The backlash President Gianni Infantino received was almost worldwide, with large confederations such as the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF also voicing their own objections to the matter. Former U.S Soccer President Carlos Codeiro, Infantino’s senior advisor, resigned in protest, saying he wanted no part of a plan that damages the sport’s future. However, not everyone is opposed the plan, with several influential soccer federations from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates publicly showing support for Infantino, in addition to a few smaller federations that rely on FIFA for their operations.

Due to the international criticism he received, Mr. Infantino has abandoned his plan on July 31 and has issued a joint communique to the members apologizing for what happened.
