“Gus” The T. rex Fetches $50.1 Million Dollars At Auction

A tyrannosaurus rex skeleton named Gus was sold for $50.1 million dollars at Sotheby’s auction in New York on  July 14th, 2026. The winning sale came after a ferocious ten minute bidding war. It also broke the previous dinosaur record auction record in 2024 for a stegosaurs named Apex.

Back in 2021, a team from Theropoda Expeditions was wrapping up a dig on a cattle farm and when they decided to move to South Dakota. the archeologist dug up a T. rex’s toe. The archeologists spent the next three summers digging up the rest of the dinosaur up, and another three summers to assembling it.

They named the T. rex after the ranch’s owner, Gary. The T. rex is 12.5 feet tall, 38 feet long, and has 183 bones. Scientists hope that Gus’s new owner will loan him to museums.
