FIFA President Gianni Infantino apologizes for FFE controversy, but stays at job

Gianni Infantino has apologized for “errors” over a controversial plan involving one of football’s biggest competitions, but he is staying on as president of FIFA . Criticism poured in from across the football world after Infantino revealed a plan called FIFA Forward Enterprise, or FFE, a $20 billion subsidiary vehicle. FFE would have taken full control of the commercial and event operations for FIFA tournaments, including highly lucrative men’s and women’s World Cups. This included managing broadcasting rights, sponsorships, ticketing, and licensing deals. FIFA planned to sell a 20% to 21% stake in FFE to outside private equity investors. But many of the countries who play in FIFA tournaments were not happy. UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, fiercely argued that “the World Cup is not for sale” and “cannot be treated as a mere investment product.”

FIFA tried to push through this plan, but it was also canceled. Legendary former retired football star [saying ‘former star’ means he’s no longer a star, but he is. The modifier should be ‘former player’] Luis Figo [which country is he from?] didn’t hold back, saying that FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s behavior was completely self-interested and demanding that he “go now.” Period inside quote, and also cite source. Meanwhile, UEFA threatened to pull all of Europe including (55 nations) out of the World Cup if FIFA didn’t back down.

Under intense pressure and facing a massive boycott, FIFA completely had scrapped the plan and tried to do damage control with emergency meetings in Morocco. But the damage is done, and although Infantino’s leadership is damaged, he still remains in charge, but European football bosses might still look for further punishments.
