The movie Minions: The Rise of Gru has made families go crazy, earning $108.5 million in ticket sales on its first weekend. The movie was played in more than 4,000 theaters in North America, according to Universal Pictures on Sunday. By the end of the week, it is expected to have earned more than $127.9 million.
The movie is set to become one of the biggest movie openings for Independence Day weekend, which is a record that was previously held by the movie Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which made $115.9 million just four days after it was released in 2011. Minions: The Rise of Gru is playing in 61 markets worldwide, and the total gross worldwide is about $202.2 million.
“It’s a tremendous debut,” Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution, said. “It’s playing very broadly across North America. Every single market doing extraordinary well.”
This is only the latest in a line of successes for Universal, which includes Sing 2, which has earned over $406 million since it was released last December, and The Bad Guys, which has earned more than $243 million. Minions: The Rise of Gru is proof that families really want to go to the theater to watch movies.
“Families feel very comfortable bringing all their kids to the theater,” said Jim Orr. “These results speak for themselves.”
Minions 2 has lured people of all ages to the theater, even toddlers. According to PostTrack tests, about 12% of people were under 10 years old.
“For many months there was this idea that family audiences were not going to come back to the theater. We can put that to rest,” Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore, said.
The spinoff of the famous Despicable Me series was held back for two whole years because of Covid-19. The sequel to the 2015 Minions movie was originally set to be released in July of 2020.
“This became an event. It was a holiday weekend, the release date was perfect, the marketing was spot on,” said Dergarabedian. “And everyone knew this was going to be in theaters only.”
Universal and Illumination have already had big successes with the Despicable Me series, which started in 2010 and has earned more than $3.7 billion worldwide.
Top Gun: Maverick is in second place and is still playing in 3,843 theaters, adding $25.5 million to its total of more than $1 billion.
In third place is Elvis by Warner Bros, which is down only 39% two weeks after its release. The movie has a total gross of about $67.3 million. It earned $19 million on Sunday.
These are the Sunday earnings of the top five highest-grossing movies, in order:
1. Minions: The Rise of Gru, worth $108.5 million.
2. Top Gun: Maverick, worth $25.5 million.
3. Elvis, worth $19 million.
