Do Celebrities Really Lose Their Privacy Just by Being Famous?
Abby A.

I don’t think Celebrities shouldn’t have to give up their right to privacy just because they’re famous. Being well-known doesn’t mean people get to comment on your body or steal your personal work. Fame is a job, not an invitation for the world to judge every detail of your life.

Ariana Grande announced she was stepping back from public life after her tour. Grande stepping back was because of the “endless, ongoing public scrutiny,” and it reignited a huge debate about celebrity privacy. This happened Earlier this year, during the release of her album Petal, people online kept commenting on her appearance and speculating about her health. Grande, who was performing on her Eternal Sunshine Tour, faced constant criticism about her thinness and even had parts of her body judged and picked apart by strangers on social media.

Celebrities have always been judged for how they look, especially women. According to the National Library of Medicine, “…women are more likely to be the subject of negative comments than men.” Before social media, people mostly saw celebrities in magazines or TV interviews, and even though the criticism was harsh, it wasn’t constant. Now, anyone with a phone can post their opinions instantly. Those opinions can spread to millions of people within minutes. The article explains that Grande has dealt with this her whole career, but recently the hate has gotten so extreme that she felt she needed to step away for her mental health.

Social media definitely makes it harder offers unique challenges for celebrities trying to protect their privacy. Even when fans say they’re concerned, commenting on someone’s appearance can still be harmful. Experts point out that these comments can affect people who struggle with body image or eating disorders. Celebrities shouldn’t have to explain their choices to the public. Grande has said multiple times that commenting on people’s bodies is inappropriate, and she shouldn’t have to over specify her health or appearance to millions of strangers.

We need to rethink how we talk about celebrities. Just because someone is famous doesn’t mean they’re not human. Fans should stop assuming they know what’s going on in a celebrity’s life based on how they look. And we should all know and remember that “concern” isn’t an excuse to meddle into someone’s privacy. If you care about a celebrity, show it by respecting their boundaries. Think before you comment, and remember that kindness and respecting boundaries matter more than curiosity. Celebrities deserve privacy just like everyone else, and it’s up to us to help protect it.
