The Great Wall of China: an Ancient Wonder
My most beautiful memory is when I visited the Great Wall this summer in Beijing, China. I went to China to visit my aunt, uncle-in-law, and my cousin. Along the way, I also walked a small section of the Great Wall, and I was stunned by its beauty. The magnificent structure looks like a dragon that winds across mountains and deserts. I couldn’t even see where the architectural masterpiece ends!
We went through the lift to reach the entrance to climb the Great Wall. The breathtaking view made me wonder about the history of the Great Wall. It has lasted for more than 2.5 millennia since it was built in the 7th century BCE. It had served well up until the last few hundred years, defending China from the nomadic invaders north of China, and it stands today as a landmark.
The Great Wall was built by Emperor Qin in the 7th century BCE. He had it built around the entire north border of China to block against nomadic invaders who would come in to raid villages. Soldiers would walk along the top of the wall, standing guard against invaders.
The Great Wall was used to protect against various invaders north of China for around 1.5 millennia until firearms became prominent. Firearms meant that the invaders could now kill soldiers rapidly, which meant they could now have more time to scale the wall, rendering it useless. However, the build quality was excellent, so the wall has survived thousands of years.
I was awed by the unique scenery of the Great Wall of China, an architectural marvel. I feel that it is an ancient wonder that is so resilient and endurable. At the time the Great Wall was built, there were no construction machines available, and people had to toil for years to bring the giant stones required to assemble the wall perfectly. However, the first part was completed within the first dynasty. And not only that, but the entire wall survives to this day, including the first part.
The memory of the Great Wall serves as the best memory I have had in my lifetime. I am amazed not only by the architecture itself, but also by the determination of the Chinese people to accomplish the project. The cultural effect and the perseverance exhibited through the historical architecture are very inspirational and long-lasting.
