Ocean Dream
“Kiki! It’s your turn!” declared Mrs. Carper sharply. Her face was serious and looked like she could freeze the ocean with a glance. Her silky blonde hair glimmered in the sunlight on a hot Saturday morning at the beach.
“Coming!” shouted a gentle voice. Kiki’s curly black hair was tied into a high ponytail with bits of sand stuck on it. She grabbed the light blue surfboard next to her feet and ran across the shining sand. She placed her surfboard on the gleaming wave and started to paddle. Her eyes were gleaming with determination.
“Faster! Keep your head still! Keep your feet together! Don’t splash the water!” Yelled Mrs. Carper.
“She is yelling at her again. Kiki might be worse at surfing than any of us.” “I know! She never impresses Mrs. Carper.” Katey and Martha whispered while looking at Kiki.
“She disappeared!” screamed Layla. Everyone’s eyes were on the empty ocean with the sun beaming down. “Call the Lifeguards!” Yelled Mrs. Carper. “I will go see,” she muttered and grabbed her maroon colored surfboard. She jogged next to the incoming wave and paddled through the water to search for Kiki.
The missing Kiki was having a hard time breathing and she fainted. Kiki felt like she was asleep and couldn’t wake up. She felt like floating, light and couldn’t feel her toes. “Wake up, dude!” said a voice with a little slime touch on her ear.
“AH!”
“Why are you hugging your surfboard?” asked the creature.
“Um…” Kiki looked at herself. Yes, she was clutching her surfboard like it was a giant pillow. Her face turned into a tomato.
“Who are you?” asked the creature as it inspected Kiki.
“I’m Kiki. Um… are you a-“ the creature cut off her sentence.
“I am a jellyfish. My name is Jelly,” declared Jelly. She swam in circles and blew bubbles at Kiki.
“Does that mean I am in the…OCEAN?!” said Kiki in horror. Her eyes were popping out and her face turned pale to purple. “Does that mean that I am breathing? underwater? But people can’t breathe underwater, though!” Kiki looked at herself and tried to breathe but there were no bubbles coming out. “What am I doing? Mrs. Carper will be so mad if I’m gone! She might even get me expelled! Am I dead already? My friends will be so worried! What should I do?” Kiki was overthinking. She looked at Jelly with disbelief in her eyes and started to cry. She felt alone and heartbroken.
“You need to calm down!” said Jelly in a concerned voice. She hugged Kiki with her slimy “hands” to comfort her. “ But that means that you’re special!” said Jelly excitedly. “You have the power of the ocean!”
“Is breathing under the water the only special thing?” asked Kiki. Her eyes were soaked like sponges.
”Of course not! See how you are talking to me?“ said Jelly in disbelief. “You are talking to a jellyfish! No humans can do that!”
“I never noticed that…” said Kiki as she wiped her wet eyes. “I guess being different is not that bad…” Then she felt sleepy.
“KIKI!” said Jelly “Here! Take that—with—you!” Jelly’s voice started to fade away as Kiki’s eyes turned dark.
By the time Kiki finally opened her eyes, someone was calling her. “Kiki! It’s your turn!” said the voice.
”Kiki! Wake up!” whispered someone.
“What?” asked Kiki as she wiped her eyes to see who was calling her and she noticed that she was at the beach, which was where the surfing practice was.
“Kiki!” yelled Mrs. Carper furiously. “Come right NOW!” she yelled again.
“Um… Coming!” said Kiki as she grabbed her surfboard and ran towards Mrs. Carper. But she never noticed that there was a gem that was carved like Jelly.
