Scientists are using satellite images to count African elephants from space. With satellites, researchers are able to survey 5000 square kilometers of elephant habitat in a single cloud-free day.

All of the elephant counting is done by a machine. This machine is specially coded to identify elephants in a variety of backgrounds.

The scientists are developing this machine algorithm to recognize small details that a human would not be able to recognize with the naked eye.

Scientists say that the satellite could contribute towards anti-poaching causes. It could vastly improve monitoring threatened elephant populations outside of Africa, too. It is also very helpful with social distancing during these times of coronavirus.
