Acts that exclude people from traveling, emigrating, or seeking refuge in the USA have been seen as controversial throughout the history of the republic. This is as most of these act’s have been against certain groups of people and end up making it so that the ones who have fled to the USA to secure freedom have to deal with discrimination and strife. This is especially controversial considering the fact that one of the main slogans of the nation was this “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” written on the statue of liberty, a symbol of american freedom and rights.
Recently the current president of the USA has said some unexpected news. This news is that the esteemed Supreme Court has agreed upon a treacherous agreement that bans travel to the USA for several countries. This law means that certain countries are not able to have it’s citizens go to the USA for traveling for any reason. The countries that were affected were minor countries such as Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. This agreement according to the BBC started to be enforced yesterday.
However while this law has created a lot of backlash for Donald Trump. Officials from the democratic party said “we have been betrayed” the ideals of the USA’s founders and warned it will ‘only further isolate’ America on the world stage”. Alongside this human rights activists such as Amnesty International USA have said its “discriminatory, racist, and downright cruel.” This supporting evidence has shown that there is a huge distaste for this and that this was seen as Trump restrincting the democratic rights of people from other countries.
Although this law was made for restricting the travel of several nations there are also other reasons for why this law is expected to eventually fail. One reason for this is because this law was already proposed. As the BBC says “In 2021, when Joe Biden became US President after Donald Trump, he scrapped the travel ban.” This quote shows how previously the democrats who were earlier mentioned to have opposed this law could potentially get rid of it within their presidency. Alongside the response from Amnesty International and other human rights groups, this law may not be in power for long.
