Bumblebees Blow Genius Minds by Solving Puzzles Spontaneously
Inside a cramped plexiglass box, a sweet, sugary reward hangs just out of reach on the ceiling. On the floor sits a lone styrofoam ball. Enter a single, untrained bumblebee. It is unable to fly, and it is too short to reach its lunch. Instead of buzzing aimlessly, the insect stops, evaluates the room, and marches toward the ball. This is the exact scenario designed by researchers at the University of Oulu in Finland that is causing jaws to drop worldwide.
This setup mirrors a famous 1931 study by German psychologist Wolfgang Köhler, who conducted cognitive experiments on chimpanzees. Köhler hung a banana out of reach and placed several boxes and sticks around the floor. After a few failed attempts, the chimpanzees succeeded by stacking the boxes to reach the banana effortlessly—a study now famously known as the “Box and Banana” experiment.
Because the chimpanzees solved the problem using the tools at hand, scientists classified this breakthrough as an act of insight. To test whether insects possess a similar capacity for problem-solving, behavioural ecologist Dr Olli Loukola and lead author Akshaye Anand Bhambore from the University of Oulu—along with colleagues from the University of Helsinki and the University of Turku—conceived a tailored for bumblebees. undefined
First, the scientists built a small arena and placed a replica “flower” inside, loaded with a reward of sugar water to mimic nectar. Because the arena was too cramped for the bees to fly up and drink, the scientists provided a foam ball that the insects could use as a platform to reach the sugar. Roughly 75% of the bees managed to drink the sugar water. Even though they had never seen anything like this setup before, they mastered the puzzle. It was a direct adaptation of the classic Box and Banana experiment, simply swapping the boxes for a ball and the banana for a replica of a flower.
To prove the bees weren’t just guessing, the researchers even added an interior wall to hide the flower from view. Remarkably, the bees would find the flower, remember its location, go back behind the barrier to retrieve the ball, and roll it to the correct spot.
For decades, scientists believed that only “big-brained” animals like chimpanzees or dolphins could use tools and solve puzzles. This tiny bee completely shattered that rule. It makes you wonder: what other incredible secrets are hiding in the minds of the smallest creatures in your own back garden?
