Winterwood is a book published by Shea Earnshaw on November 5th, 2019. It mixes suspense with a . The reviews of the book are really mixed, with some audiences saying it’s not worth reading, while others think that it is a fantastic book and a high recommendation to any readers.
The tale begins in a snowy town known as Fir Haven, which is set right next to the haunting Wicker Woods. Our female main character, Nora Walker, is a descendant of Walkers who are seen as witch-like girls that have magical powers deep inside them. She lives in a cabin near a boy’s camp for teenagers that are sent there by parents who have had enough of them. Nora, though already 17 years old, has not yet discovered what her powers may be. Every day seemed to be a simple and consistent routine when an unsuspected snowstorm knocked out the power inside the town. It was a day after that, Nora was informed there had been two incidents during the snowstorm; two boys from the camp were gone, one dead, one missing.
Only a few camp directors knew which boys were gone, but none could confirm which one had actually died. At first, this news didn’t really affect Nora and her life at all, until 2 weeks later. When the moon was bright and full, she paid a visit to the haunting forest beside her home–the Wicker Woods. During her trip through the Wicker Woods, she stumbled upon a boy lying in the center of the trees, where things that were missing were found. Weak and unconscious at her feet was Oliver Huntsman, one of the boys who went missing after the storm. Nora takes Oliver back to her cabin, where she nurses him back to health with old herbal knowledge. When Oliver comes to, he realizes he is in the home of what the other boys call the “witch girl”, but he discovers that Nora isn’t very strange like the rest of her family, even when he calls her out.
Days pass and the power remains cut off, but eventually Oliver returns back to the camp… only to find out no one notices him, as if he were just a ghost. One day, during a party being hosted by a popular girl from Nora’s school, Nora finds herself getting taken by Oliver’s previous friend group and locked in a room while they figure themselves out. Oliver frees Nora and the pair make their way back to her cabin, and spend the night together. In the end, however, there is a surprising plot twist as Nora discovers that Oliver was never the missing boy. He was the one who died. The boy who was noted as missing was hidden in the attic of the camp. Oliver was a ghost who had been sleeping in the Wicker Woods until Nora woke him up. In the end, Nora finds her special ability–the power to control and bend time at her will–and bring Oliver back to life.
Winterwood is a story full of fantasy and suspense with a cold, dark twist, and is usually very entertaining to those who enjoy gloomy, mysterious books that sprinkle in a bit of romance. Legends say those who read it can learn the secret ways of the Walker family and perform magic spells of their own, even without being a Walker themself.
