Good work revising this piece for punctuation, Ethan! I’m recommend it for publication :))
JACKIE AND SHADOW BRING TWO NEW CHICKS TO THE WORLD
A pair of Bald Eagles living in Big Bear Valley, California, named Jackie and Shadow have recently hatched two new chicks! After laying the eggs in February, the chicks have finally hatched and come into the world!
These eggs are not Jackie’s first clutch of eggs. She had a first clutch of eggs in January. Sadly, those eggs were destroyed by crows when Jackie and Shadow weren’t in the nest protecting and incubating them.
The two eggs in the second clutch hatched on Easter weekend. The first chick hatched on April 4th, however the second came on April 5th. Jackie keeps them warm in the nest while Shadow hunts for food to give to them. The two chicks will have their first flights in 10-14 weeks. However, they will still return to the nest for a while after beginning to fly.
To help protect these bald eagles and other wildlife, FOBV( Friends Of Big Bear Valley) is starting a fundraiser. They have already completed a naming contest for the two chicks. All you have to do is donate to help the wildlife. Then you can send a suggestion for the chicks’ names. When the fundraiser ended, 20 of the name suggestions will be chosen. Then local third graders will vote on the ones they like the most. The winning names were Sandy and Luna.
Sandy and Luna’s parents, Jackie and Shadow, have had a relationship for a very long time. But Shadow is not Jackie’s first mate. Jackie’s first mate was another bald eagle known as Mr. B. In 2018, however, a bald eagle named Shadow came near their nest. No matter how hard Jackie and Mr. B tried to chase him away, he wouldn’t leave. Eventually Mr. B gave up and left the nest. Afterwards Shadow moved in and became Jackie’s new mate. Jackie’s first eggs were not with Shadow as she had successfully raised a chick named Stormy with Mr. B. Also during Jackie’s time with Mr. B, a camera was installed in the nest so that FOBV could observe the bald eagles.
Eagles like Jackie and Shadow are helping Bald Eagles come back from the brink of extinction. People like you can help as well by donating to wildlife centers and more!
