Apple Electronics’ Costs Surge

On June 25, 2026, Apple increased the prices for nearly all of its electronics except for iPhones by 15% to 25%, due to the skyrocketing prices of memory chips, an important component of electronics. Prices for memory chips have quadrupled as a result of the recent spike in demand from the AI industry.

Memory chips are crucial to the AI industry, since AI needs to store vast datasets and quickly recall information to respond. With the AI industry’s meteoric rise, the demand for memory storage has consequently surged.

The high profit of AI memory chips drives the focus away from the chip production for consumer electronics, leading many companies like Micron to prioritize building chips for AI. Although other companies have tried to produce chips for electronics, the process of building machines to easily make chips takes months. With the surge in demand but slow increase in supply as companies attempt to quickly build machines to match the demand, memory chips have become dramatically more expensive.

Tim Cook, Apple CEO, stated that “Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable. We’re doing our best to mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us, and we’ve been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable,” in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Apple’s MacBook Pro increased $300, the MacBook Neo increased $100, the iPad Air increased $150, and the iPad Pro increased $200. Overall, Apple’s electronics’ prices have jumped by 20%.

Other companies, like Microsoft and Dell, have already increased their products’ prices. With the existing storage of memory chips, Apple survived longer but still had to make these price changes out of its normal price-adjustment cycle. Although iPhones are currently unaffected, their prices are expected to rise in the next round of repricing.
