Americans to spend 38 Billion on Mother’s Day

This year Americans are set to spend around 38 Billion dollars for Mother’s Day. Mothers Day is always the second Sunday of May. This year it falls on May 10th.

This tradition was thought of by a schoolteacher named Anna Jarvis. She wanted to honor all of the mothers. The first celebration took place in 1908 in a church in West Virginia. It was an immediate success, so Anna began to ask and campaign for it to become a national holiday. Her work paid off as in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared it a national holiday and set aside a day for it.

When the holiday became official, people who ran stores began giving discounts for Mothers Day. Its now one of the third largest retail holidays where people cut back on sales. The National Retail Federation claims that 84% of Americans will buy items for Mother’s day. The average American spend around $284 on Mother’s Day. This means that estimates are that people will spend around 38 billion on mothers day this year! This means that this will exceed the previous record of money spent. The previous record was set in 2023 when people spent $35.7 billion. Greeting cards and flowers are the things that are bought the most on Mothers day. Other things include jewelry and gift cards.

However, not everyone liked how retailers were cutting back on sales and trying to get people to buy more things. Even people like Anna Jarvis disliked it. She filed many lawsuits against these retailers and by the time she died in 1948, she almost hated mothers day. However, to this day Retailers are still discounting and making more money than ever on these Mothers day sales.
Retailers will discount not only cards and flowers but also things like electronics, clothing, and personal devices such as spas.

Even though buying gifts for your mothers is a good idea, some mothers value time with their family more than anything else. So try cooking dinner for them or generally helping them with anything they need!
