A new species of monkey has been found in the rain forests of Congo. The monkey is called a lewiky.

The first sighting of the monkey was in 2008, but because the picture was blurry no one paid attention. Scientists started researching the new species, but they were worried that it was endangered. Then, in 2018, a researcher managed to take a clear picture, and scientists found out that it wasn’t a known species. They wanted to get more information, so over the next few years they talked to people in the area.

Finding the monkey was the most challenging part. The researchers had to cover a huge area as they tried to find the animal. Over four years, they only spotted the monkey about 114 times. They learned that the monkeys were very shy and inactive, which is one of the reasons why people know so little about about them.
3 monkeys that were found dead, killed by boars, were taken to the lab for examination. Sadly, scientists have discovered that the monkeys are endangered.
