A Heatwave Strikes Europe Unprepared
Starting on June 17, shocking temperatures in Europe spread east as a second heatwave struck following a previous one in May. The searing heatwave has caused people to die, directly and indirectly, from working outside to drowning in restricted swimming areas.
Temperatures have reached more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Spain, France, and other countries. England’s temperature broke the record for June and is expected to continue climbing. Europe is used to cooler temperatures: this heatwave took them by surprise, complicating daily life in multiple aspects.
Buildings in these regions are designed to retain heat for cold winters and are not adapted for high temperatures. Three-quarters of homes in Western Europe don’t have AC. Staying cool is not easy.
A nuclear plant in France uses a nearby river to cool down the system, but the water is too hot to cool down the reactor. The government had to shut down the plant, which caused an electricity shortage. More than 12,000 homes have lost power. Unable to run fans and ACs, people are suffering from the heat.
Travel was also impacted by heat. Railroad tracks are warping in the scorching heat. Many train stations have delayed or canceled trips, which makes it difficult to escape to the coast or even to commute.
The heatwave is not only disrupting daily life but also causing deaths around Europe. The extreme heat has caused at least 40 people to drown because they swam in restricted areas in an attempt to cool down. Multiple children have tragically died after parents and guardians left them unattended in locked cars. Furthermore, people have died from working outside without understanding the dangers of heat exposure.
The heatwave is projected to move eastward, and temperatures in Western Europe should cool down soon. However, these extreme weather events will continue to occur as climate change exacerbates. Heatwaves will only worsen if people continue producing as much greenhouse gases as now.
