A Day With an Illegal Child

If I could spend a whole day with any character from a movie or book, I would choose Luke Garner from The Shadow Children series. I would hope to meet him and ask him questions about his life of hiding in the attic, how he gained courage, and lastly, what it was like overthrowing the Population Police.

The first question I would ask him is what he would do when he got bored while hiding in his attic. He would explain that when he was bored, he would go to his friend Jen’s house. Jen would give him books and papers for him to read.

Another question I would ask him is how he could go to school and meet other friends. He would answer that Mr. Talbot, Jen’s dad, got him a fake I.D. card after the death of Jen at a rally. He was able to go to school, but there were many bullies there. He met friends, and together, they made plans to overthrow the cruel government.

Lastly, I would ask him how he had changed from when he hid in the attic to when he had so much the courage to explain his entire life and the fact that he was a shadow child in front of a large crowd. His response would probably be, “I used to be scared of the Population Police, but now, my friends supported me, and once, I had to explain my life against the Population Police in a large crowd. The guards wanted to kill me, but a man stepped in the way to protect me. “

I would hope to learn from this meeting with him. I want to know why and how he changed from a timid boy hiding in the attic to a grown boy telling the world he was an illegal child. Luke is a dynamic character who changed throughout the entire series.
