On Saturday, thousands of flights were cancelled throughout the U.S. due to storms and weather issues, stalling family reunions over the winter holidays.
These weather issues were unique in each region in the U.S., with heavy rain ravaging the West, tornadoes slicing across the landscape of the South, and storms in the Northeast that threatened to bring inclement weather.
Tornadoes in the Houston area of Texas brought at least one reported death, and injured four others, according to The New York Times. At the Dallas Fort Worth airport, the raging winds delayed many flights, and the Dallas Love Field Airport lost more than 50 percent of flights from Southwest Airlines (its largest carrier).
Overall, more than 9,000 flights in the U.S. were canceled or delayed, according to data from FlightAware.
Regina Esquivel had been at the George Bush airport, trying to fly to Newark, N.J., but the plane was stuck on the tarmac for almost four hours due to weather issues. The passengers were denied food and drinks while they waited. “It’s insane,” said Ms. Esquivel, expressing her annoyance.
National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Pereira says long-range tornadoes might strike communities from the Texas-Louisiana border, Northern and Central Louisiana, and in parts of Mississippi, according to KUOW. “Once they touch down, they remain on the ground, and can do damage over quite a length, quite a distance.”
Despite the coming New Year, we won’t see much snow—instead, well-above normal temperatures are expected for a large portion of the country.
