On Friday, December 27th, a fire erupted at the Bryant Park Holiday Market, located in Midtown Manhattan, New York. While several booths were burned, no one got hurt.
The Bryant Park Holiday Market is a popular open-air market hosted for 10 days. It sells local crafts, jewelry, and gifts from all round the world. Around four million people visited the park this year. The Market boasts free ice-rink admission, a Christmas light tour, and dozens of little shops.
The Fire Department reported receiving a call a little before 9:30 a.m. about a fire on the South side of the park. The fire was contained by 10:00 a.m., and no one got hurt except for some holiday booths. The plumes of smoke from the fire could be seen from miles away.
This wasn’t the only fire that has affected the holiday markets. The Herald Square Holiday Market had a fire as well, leaving a firefighter seriously injured. The fire started at around 4:00 a.m. and destroyed 18 shops. This park was only six blocks away from the Bryant Holiday Market.
Joseph Castellano, A battalion chief in the New York Fire Department, said that on Friday a fire was found in a structure around six by 40 feet, which had four vendors inside. An adjacent kiosk and the roof of the ice rink suffered slight damage. When asked if there might be a connection between the two fires, Castellano said, “I don’t think they are a concern at all. I just think we had two fires.”
However, Micheal Strauss, who worked at an office nearby and had been alerted about the fire by a coworker, said, “I wonder if it’s a coincidence. I don’t know how the fire started.”
